I'll always remember where I was when I heard that Elvis had died: in my den, watching my mom across the bar in the kitchen as she answered the yellow rotary kitchen phone and my dad told her to turn on the TV. Mom was in shock. The TV reporter was in shock. How did it happen, they asked. Why? I watched in confusion, knowing who Elvis was but not understanding his significance to her generation.
Fast-forward about 30 years. I'll always remember
where I was when I heard that Michael Jackson had died: just leaving the checkout at Walmart with a cart full of groceries. My husband called my cellphone to tell me. Like an idiot, I just froze, blinking,
mouth open, trying to grasp it. No. Really? How? Walmart was bustling with activity and I was wondering, don't they know? Maybe I should tell somebody? And my daughter, the same age I was when Elvis died, saw me in shock and watched with confusion, knowing who Michael Jackson was, but not understanding his significance to my generation.
It's been three days, and I'm still struggling to get my mind around the fact that Michael Jackson has died. I was a teen in the 80s, during his heyday with Off the Wall and then the huge ultra mega-hit Thriller (yes, I had and still have the album). I used to babysit a little boy who was absolutely obsessed with Michael, to the point of wearing his red leather look-alike jacket during the summer! And OMG, who didn't try to moonwalk?
We didn't have cable, so I had to see the Thriller video premiere at my cousin's house. I remember the day clearly. I don't know if I'd say it was life-changing, but when you saw it, you knew you were watching history in the making...something that was significant, that would be influential.
What happened to Michael Jackson in his personal life I don't understand, and I'm trying to stick with "judge not lest ye be judged" (particularly now, when his life is over and that judgment has already been made by a higher authority), but his bizarre personal life aside, Michael Jackson's music and videos were a huge part of my life, particularly in my teen years, and that's how I want to remember the man -- as a talented and influential musician who defined pop culture in the 80s.
I've heard that, as tends to be the case when a big celebrity passes on, the demand for Michael Jackson's music and DVDs, as well as books about him, is tremendous. I checked Barnes and Noble this morning and they have over 300 items by or related to MJ. Some are showing "available in 1-2 weeks" and that may be optimistic with demand the way it is. Just wanted to share the Michael Jackson items at Barnes and Noble link in case anyone else is interested.
