Happy Grandparents' Day!

Maw-Maw, Granny, Grandma, Mimi, Gramps, Pop, Granddad... whatever you're called, if you're a grandparent, happy Grandparents Day today from the staff of QuickRewards.net!

My Maw-Maw lived about two hours away but we visited her at least once a month, sometimes more.  We spent all of the major holidays at her house (my other set of grandparents died when I was younger).  She sewed all the granddaughters these super-hip leopard print capes in the mid-'70s, when they were in style.  She taught me how to snap beans and TRIED to teach me how to quilt and how to make wild plum jelly, but being more of the bookish type, I never caught on.  That was okay with her, though -- she took me to the library instead.  She had a huge heart and would cry if someone in the family was going through a tough time.  Her homemade biscuits were AMAZING.  SHE was amazing.  She passed away a week after my daughter was born, coming up on 9 years in December.  I miss her every day.

Grandparents have SUCH an important role to play in the family -- you're the keeper of our family history, you know the "old-fashioned" (or some would say, "the time-tested and PROVEN") ways of doing things that are being lost in the modern rush to get by with doing things faster and not always as well.  You grandparents provide our kids with a role model, a confidante, a safe haven...  Heck, many of you are RAISING your grandchildren, alone or with help.

None of us would be here without our grandparents.  Thank you for giving us life.  Thank you for loving us.  Thank you for being you!  Happy Grandparents Day!

Today, as we celebrate the anniversary of the United States' independence, I hope you'll join me in sending prayers (if your beliefs allow) and well-wishes to the folks who KEEP us independent, the United States military!  Our troops, many of whom entered service just out of high school, are out there giving their best to protect our country and keep it great.  Like other public servants, including teachers, police, firefighters, and EMTs, they don't get paid anywhere near what they're worth to our citizens!  On behalf of the staff of QuickRewards.net, THANK YOU to the U.S. military and their families for the hard work and sacrifices that keep our country safe!

And as you celebrate the 4th, please be safe yourself -- Don't drink and drive, watch out for people who didn't take that advice if you're on the highway, and PLEASE supervise the use of fireworks!  The National Fire Protection Association said that in 2006, 9,200 fireworks-related injuries were seen in U.S. emergency rooms, with the highest injury rates being in kids ages 10-14.  They're pretty to watch, yes, but they can also be very dangerous!  Read the instructions, clear the spectators back, no horseplay, and if a fuse burns out, don't try to relight it!
