You know how Google now offers suggestions for how to complete your search phrase after you start typing it in?  It's a real hoot if you haven't played with it before!  Anyway, I typed in the phrase "birthdays are like" and clicked the links it suggested, and I wanted to share the findings of this scientific research with you today.

There was a great article today in a Canadian newspaper about a gentleman who celebrated his 100th birthday on Saturday.  He talks about how life has changed since he was a boy.  I thought it was pretty interesting, and it sure makes you wonder what we're doing without today that will be totally commonplace in another generation or two!

Now if you're feeling a little down about turning a year older this week, here's a story to show you that you've still got quite a bit of living to do:  a nursing home in the Bronx had NINE residents celebrating their 100th birthdays this year, so they threw a big party to celebrate back in June.  One woman attributed her longevity to avoiding cigarettes and playing music on her accordion and flute, another to enjoying the little things in life like playing bingo and getting a nice manicure, and a third said it was all about staying active.

I don't know anything about numerology but I found this fun and interesting -- it's about your Numerology Birth Path.  It tells you how to calculate a Primary and Secondary Birth Path, and then you can click to see what that number suggests your personality is.  Your Primary number is the digit of the day on which you were born.  If you were born on a two-digit day of the month, you add the digits...unless you were born on the 11th, in which your number is 11.  (I was born on the 1st of December, so it says I'm an "Achiever" primarily.  Hmm, I dunno if I agree with that one!)  Anyhow...just thought it was kinda fun and thought I'd pass it along!  Feel free to leave a comment if you agree or disagree with your assessment!

They share a birthday with author Roald Dahl, singer Mel Torme, and actress Jean Smart (Designing Women).  On this date in 1971 the World Hockey Association was formed, in 1993 "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" premiered, and in 1996 rapper Tupac Shakur died from wounds suffered in a drive-by shooting six days before.

While today, the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, is a somber day for many of us...one of our QR Birthday Bunch members is having a birthday today, and I think we need to rally around her and surround her with POSITIVE and HAPPY vibes today for her birthday!  Please join me in wishing a VERY happy birthday today to Paula C.!

Tough day to try to "celebrate" anything in America after this date in 2001, but in the same boat with Paula today are singer Harry Connick, Jr., director Brian DePalma (Mission Impossible, Scarface), and rapper Ludacris.  Aside from this being the birthdate of some very special people (including our Paula!), some other GOOD things that happened on this date in history:  in 1967 the Carol Burnett Show premiered on CBS, in 1961 the World Wildlife Fund was founded, and in 1989 the iron curtain opened between communist Hungary and Austria.  The Miss America pageant premiered on TV on this date in 1954, too (Miss California, Lee Meriwether, was the winner).

On August 26th of 1957, the first Ford Edsel was produced, in 1967 Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" was released, and in 1987 Sonny Bono announced he was running for mayor of Palm Springs, CA (he eventually won).  On August 25th of 1916, the National Park Service was established, in 1972 the CAT Scan was first introduced, and in 2001 singer Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash.

Nancy shares a birthday with Steve Guttenberg, Cal Ripken Jr., Dave Chappelle, and Marlee Matlin.  On this date in 1932, Amelia Earhardt became the first woman to fly across the U.S. non-stop, in 1981 Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20-to-life for murdering John Lennon, and in 1989 Pete Rose was banned from baseball for life for gambling on baseball.

Others celebrating birthdays today include Bob Dole, Alex Trebek, Don Henley, and David Spade.  It's said that on this date in 1376, the Pied Piper of Hamelin led all the rats out of town.  (Seriously!  I never knew that was supposed to be a real event!)  On this date in 1796, the city of Cleveland was founded, in 1934 John Dillinger was mortally shot by FBI agents, and in 1991 Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested on multiple counts of murder (he was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison).

I can't hear Alex Trebek's name without thinking about all of the SNL Jeopardy sketches and laughing.  A few months ago, Will Ferrell guested on SNL and brought back his awesome Alex Trebek impression (with Norm McDonald doing a walk-on appearance as clueless Burt Reynolds, Tom Hanks as an also clueless Tom Hanks, and as always, Darrell Hammond is brilliant as Trebek's arch-enemy Sean Connery).  Here's that sketch (though I have to warn you, it is rated R -- don't watch with the kids!).

They share a birthday with Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard from Star Trek: TNG), Harrison Ford, Cheech Marin, and Louise Mandrell.  On July 13, 1968, Steppinwolf released "Born to Be Wild," in 1978, Lee Iococa was fired as president of Ford Motor Company, and on July 13, 1985, the famous mega-concert for famine relief in Ethiopia, "Live Aid," took place.

Queen OWNED Live Aid, or at least the U.K. part of it.  Here's a snippet from a documentary discussing Queen's performance.  See some of the other great performances by Madonna, U2, Sting, Elton John, Mick Jagger, and many others here.  The goal for Live Aid was to raise one million pounds (the organizer, Bob Geldof, was British), and they eventually raised 150 million -- equal to almost $285 million in US dollars.  Now that'll feed some hungry folks!

Kevin Bacon (who I'll always love for his role as Ren McCormack in "Footloose") is famous for supposedly being connected to everybody in Hollywood through "six degrees" or less.  Here's a fun site that lets you type in two actors names and it'll show you how they're connected.  It showed Laurence Olivier connects to Miley Cyrus in just four steps!  LOL
